Press release

Following a committee meeting of the Association on 24th March, 2001, the following statement was issued.

RRA act on foot and mouth disease

The Road Records Association (RRA), one of Britain’s oldest cycling organisations, does not organise cycling events, but ratifies claims to new records which have been attempted under the Rules of the Association. These Rules include methods of timing and the way in which the organiser may arrange for the rider to be followed by helpers in cars.

The routes for RRA records are almost always on ‘A’ class roads. However, the Association is extremely concerned that any activity under their name could unwittingly cause the spread of this disease and has put in place the following conditions.

Effective immediately :
1) Claims to records must include copies of valid approvals from MAFF offices (or their Scottish equivalent) covering the route through which the proposed attempt will pass.
2)All vehicles and personnel involved in any way with an attempt must not pass over or park on grass verges or in any farm & field entrances at any time.
3) If these conditions necessitate more frequent passing of the rider(s), these passes must be fully reported.

These conditions will remain in force until the RRA advise they have been withdrawn. Organisers of attempts are advised to contact the Records Secretary (Eddie Mundy, tel : 020 8673 4588) or the General Secretary before submitting a schedule.
