Forty people attended the AGM of the Road Records Association, which took place on Sunday 18th February 2006 at the Red Lion Hotel in Hatfield. The committee remains largely unchanged, although Tim Dadswell has resigned as Chairman, being replaced by Mike Johnson. Tim remains as Treasurer. There were no rule changes made, but a number of topics were discussed with the objective of making record attempts more popular and accessible. In particular, the possibilities of age-categories and sponsorship of attempts will be investigated.
Following the meeting, the 31st Triennial Luncheon was held, with just over 100 places laid. The principal guest was Fashion Designer and TV Personality Jeff Banks, who entertained with tales from his cycling past, including two recent occasions when he cycled from Land's End to John o'Groats to raise money for charity. These rides clearly gave him great satisfaction, although the incident when he stopped briefly and subsequently became over-run by aggressive ants was probably not one of the high points.
After hearing from Jeff, trophies and awards were presented for records recently broken by Lynne Taylor, Marina Bloom, Chris Hopkinson and Ralph Dadswell. Responding on behalf of the record breakers were Dave Johnson (High Wycombe CC) and Chris Hopkinson (API/Metrow). Dave spoke wittily about the dubious delights of being the "back end" of a tandem pairing, and how all the glamour and glory is heaped upon the one who steers (!). Chris then gave a few minutes insight into his participation in the 2005 Race Across America, 3052 miles in conditions varying from desert heat to drifting snow, to say nothing of the long list of terrible physical problems to be overcome in order to reach the finish line after nearly twelve days.
